Fall 2024: Letter from the President & CEO

Dear Friends and Community,

As we lean into the crisp air of fall, I find myself admiring the beautiful changes and colors that come with this season, and the life transitions I’m embracing. Earlier this month, I announced I am stepping down as President and CEO of the Latino Policy Forum in 2025. After nearly 16 amazing years leading the Forum, it’s time to hand off this unique institution to the next generation of leaders. The Board of Directors is in the process of selecting my successor, and once selected, I will transition into a senior advisor role to ensure a smooth handoff through 2025.

Though this change is significant for me, I am very excited for the future of the Forum. With a newly completed strategic plan, we’ve laid out our ambitious plan for the future, backed by the largest and most talented team we’ve ever had. The foundation we’ve built together, through hard work and community, will continue to drive the Forum’s mission forward.

I’m delighted to introduce two new team members. Carlos A. Trejo, director of individual giving and Miguel Hernandez, digital communications associate, are both playing crucial roles in amplifying our voice and strengthening our ability to have a long-lasting impact.

I’m inspired by everything that our staff is working on. Our Education Team recently launched a new set of bilingual workshops. These workshops are designed to equip parents, community members, and school partners with tools to support children’s education and well-being. From early childhood development and advocacy to college preparation and readiness, these workshops empower attendees to play an active role in shaping their children’s future. If you’re interested in any of these workshops, please contact Brian Herrera, community engagement manager.

Our civic engagement team continues to lead work on key issues in our community. Our immigration policy analyst, Nina Sedeño, recently published a blog on the Biden-Harris administration’s actions to support undocumented immigrants and their families. Anna Arzuaga, our housing policy analyst, is bringing to light the hidden struggle of doubled-up homelessness, where families are forced to share overcrowded homes due to economic necessity and the urgent need for solutions to better support our community.

I’m also incredibly proud of the 2024 graduates of our Multicultural Leadership Academy (MLA). This year’s cohort of 22 committed leaders are already making a difference, fostering collaboration between Latino and Black communities to address pressing issues that will help our communities. I also want to acknowledge Senior Program Manager for MLA, NiCole Ward, who every year, supports, organizes and facilitates these transformative experiences for each cohort Applications for the 2025 cohort open soon, and I encourage those interested to fill out our interest form.

Amidst all of this, our largest Latinos on the Move is happening on October 11! Every year, we honor those who have made significant contributions to the mission of the Latino Policy Forum and have shown outstanding leadership and advocacy for the Latino community. This year, we are proud to honor:

  • Dr. Ana Gil Garcia & Illinois Venezuelan Alliance
  • Paula Gean & Rev. Dr. Kenneth D. Phelps
  • Cynthia Nambo
  • Erika Villegas
  • The Mobile Migrant Health Team

In a time of urgent need, these community members and organizations volunteered their time and energy and rose to the occasion to help our new neighbors. They are an example of our capacity for compassion and their efforts have been nothing short of inspiring – providing meals, clothing, housing, and medical support to people in need and creating unity among our communities.

Please join us at this year’s Latinos on the Move as we celebrate and recognize these inspiring awardees. Plus, we’ll be hearing from Sindy Benavides, the president and CEO of Latino Victory, who will be the keynote speaker and will share about the crucial role of Latino voters in this year’s —and every— election and inspire us to “claim our power.” I hope to see you there.

As always, thank you for all your support over the past 16 years. The Forum’s commitment to “speak truth, advocate for justice, act with civility and integrity, and put trust in democracy” will remain strong as we continue to advocate for Latino equity in Illinois. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Sylvia Puente
