As we begin this new year, I want to thank you for standing with the Latino Policy Forum and with Latino and immigrant communities across Illinois.
Last year was one of the most challenging years in recent memory. The federal government’s cuts to education programs and the social safety net, civil rights violations, and rampant immigration enforcement abuses on some of the most vulnerable people in our community have had devastating impacts that will be felt for years to come. But even amid that darkness and pain, I witnessed something powerful: our community’s fierce response. And that fills me with hope.
Our communities refuse to be divided. The Trump administration has worked hard to create distrust, discredit the utility of education and socio-economic programs, and dismantle partnership efforts, but we’ve strengthened our commitment to unity and solidarity instead. Through our participation with Allies United, a coalition bringing together Black, Latino, Asian, Arab, Muslim, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and disability rights leaders to address the needs of our communities, we’re building power across movements, demanding accountability, and showing what’s possible when we work together.
The Latino Policy Forum continues to be responsive to you, our community. We are meeting the moment and instead of backing down from our mission, we’re doubling down. In 2025, we fought for and won passage of the Safe Schools for All legislation (HB 3247 and HB 1312), which protects immigrant families in licensed childcare centers, K-12 schools, higher education institutions, and state courthouses, among other sensitive places. These victories prove that when we listen to the community’s concerns, and advocate together with families, educators, and leaders, we can create meaningful change even in the most challenging times.
I’ll be honest, being hopeful requires effort. Hope is an act of resistance, and it’s work we at the Latino Policy Forum choose to do every single day. When I feel overwhelmed by what’s happening in our community, our country, and our world, I ground myself in what I know to be true: solutions built by and with community are the answer.
There are good people doing good work. Every day, I’m surrounded by staff, partners, advocates, and supporters who inspire me and remind me why this work matters.
As we move through this year together, I encourage you to take care of yourselves, your families, and your communities. Protect each other. Stay connected. It’s easier to sustain hope when we’re surrounded by what is good: joy, friends, family, colleagues and working toward the same vision.
Our work is important. And when we stand strong with community, we will win.
In solidarity,
Linda Xóchitl Tortolero
