What is same-day voter registration?
If you missed the deadline for voter registration or weren’t able to change your personal information on time, you can still vote! Under new Illinois law, people can now register and vote on Election Day.
First implemented in 2014 during the presidential election, eligible voters can now show up to a polling place location (based on voter address) with two valid forms of identification and vote the same day. Voters seeking to update personal information can also do so following the same process.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Am I already registered? If you are unsure about your current voter status, follow these steps to find out.
- Find your designated polling place here. Illinois county websites provide up-to-date listings of local polling places, early voting hours and Election Day news.
- Arrive at your polling place with two valid forms of identification. Once you are ready to vote, make sure to have these with you.
Acceptable forms of ID include:
- Illinois driver’s license
- Illinois state ID
- Employee or student ID
- Credit card
- Social security card
- Birth certificate
- Utility bill in applicant’s name
- Mail postmarked to the applicant
- Valid U.S. passport
- Lease or rental contract
Neither needs to be a photo ID, but one must include your current address.
That’s it, you are ready to vote!
