Latino Policy Forum Responds to Supreme Court Order on Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans

“The conditions so many fled from, many of them by foot and carrying children, have not changed so returning is dangerous. This administration just turned its back on them.

CHICAGO — Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court said it would allow the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan nationals, pausing a lower court ruling that had blocked the administration from ending the program. Under the TPS program, migrants from certain countries receive work permits and protection from deportation.

“The decision to end TPS is cruel and like most policies on immigration from this administration, is rooted in animus against immigrants,” said Latino Policy Forum President & CEO, Linda Xóchitl Tortolero. “The people who left their lives behind in Venezuela came to the United States seeking safety for themselves and their families. The conditions so many fled from, many of them by foot and carrying children, have not changed so returning is dangerous. This administration just turned its back on them.”

An estimated 350,000 Venezuelans under the 2023 designation will potentially be impacted by this latest action while a challenge makes its way through the court of appeals, including the tens of thousands of Venezuelan individuals and families that came to Illinois. The Department of Homeland Security has not issued any new guidance at this time. For those with TPS status, it is important to speak with a trusted immigration attorney or DOJ-accredited representative to explore available options.
